What is Polyporus Umbellatus?Polyporus umbellatus is the sclerotia of Polyporus umbellatus (Pers.) Fries, a fungus of the family Polyporus umbellatus. Contains polyporus, which is similar to Poria, α-hydroxy-tetracosanoic acid (α-hydroxy-tetracosanoic acid), ergosterol, biotin, etc.Polyporus umbellatus extract is a rare, edible species of mushroom, found growing on roots of old beeches or oak. It isalso called Lumpy Bracket and Umbrella Polypore.A close relative of Grifola frondosa (Maitake), P. umbellatus differs from most medicinal mushrooms in that traditionally it has been harvested as a hyphal mass, or sclerotium, which only forms when P. umbellatus is symbiotically associated with Armillaria species.It is a “butt rot” that fruits terrestrially, near the bases and roots of hardwoods across northern North America. It is apparently fairly rare on our continent, and is encountered far less frequently than the somewhat similar Grifola frondosa.
