What is Pomegranate Peel Extract?Pomegranate peel extract is a product extracted from the peel of the pomegranate Punicagranatum L. as a raw material. Commercial extracts are usually standardized to contain 40.0% ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is an effective anticancer agent. It can block human papilloma virus DNA replication, inhibit the G1 phase of mitosis of cancer cell chromosomes, prevent and control P53 anti-cancer genes from teratogenicity, and repair P53 in head and neck cancer cells Gene activity has the same effect on breast, pancreas, esophagus, skin, colon and prostate cancer cells; it can enhance human immune function; it has antihypertensive and sedative effects. Used in medicine and cosmetics, as an antioxidant, has anti-cancer and anti-virus effects.
Pomegranate peel extract (Punica Granatum L.) have natural phytochemicals with superior protective effects stabilizing a variety of the most common vegetable oils consumed globally. Among five different pomegranate peel powder, methanolic extract has maximum total phenolic content of 18.89%, a total flavonoid content of 13.95 mg QE kg−1, and a relative antioxidant activity of 93% when compared to others.
In order to improve stability of pomegranate seed oil, the influence of natural antioxidant (0.1% pomegranate peel extract) and a combination of synthetic antioxidant (0.01% butylhydroxytoluene) and it (0.05%) was investigated. The oxidation process was followed by monitoring fatty acid composition and measuring the quality and stability parameters of oil (acid value, peroxide value, anisidine value and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances value) during storage for 12 days at 65 ⁰C. Furthermore, total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity was measured. It as well as a combination of pomegranate peel extract and BHT can have a significant positive impact (P < 0.05) on improvement of the quality and stability parameters of pomegranate seed oil. Furthermore, such activity was better than BHT used alone.
