What is Wild chrysanthemum extract ?Wild Chrysanthemum extract is a yellow-brown powdery mixture of flavonoids extracted from the dried flower heads of Chrysanthemummorifolium Ramat. Wild chrysanthemum [Dendranthemaindicum (Linn.) DesMoul.] is a plant of the genus Dendranthema. in the Compositae family. Also known as wild chrysanthemum, soil chrysanthemum, grass chrysanthemum, coix seed, wild mountain chrysanthemum, wild yellow chrysanthemum. It is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere and is distributed in all provinces of our country. It grows on hillsides, ditch sides, roadsides, grasslands, etc. Wild chrysanthemum is a commonly used Chinese herbal medicine, which has the effects of dispelling wind, clearing heat, improving eyesight and detoxification. In recent years, pharmacological studies have found that it has antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and immune, protective cardiovascular system, anti-tumor, liver protection and neuroprotective pharmacological effects, and has good clinical application value and potential.Wild chrysanthemum extract was also demonstrated to reduce low-dose UVB-induced expression of the photoaging-related matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9. The ROS level elevated by UVB irradiation was strongly attenuated by wild chrysanthemum extract. Further study revealed that it reduced UVB-triggered ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK phosphorylation and their protective role, which is partially dependent on inhibiting p38 activation.These results suggest that wild chrysanthemum extract can protect the skin from UVB-induced acute skin damage and photoaging by reducing the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and inhibiting p38 MAPK phosphorylation. The present study confirmed the protective role of wild chrysanthemum against UV-induced skin disorders in vitro and indicated the possible mechanism. Further study to identify the active components in wild chrysanthemum extract would be useful for developing new drugs for preventing and treating skin diseases, including skin cancer and photoaging, induced by UV irradiation.
